2016 has been a momentous year for the world, for many reasons. One of them being the loss of legends. Fidel Castro died on the 25th November 2016. While I still pondered what that meant to politics of our time, I entered the F&F Clothing press event. As it turns out, F&F’s 2017 Spring/Summer collection is a homage to Cuba. I confess, I felt a bit guilty enjoying the Samba tunes playing out in Mayfair, while Cuba was still officially in mourning, then again, what better way to celebrate all that’s wonderful about a place and life. It was awesome event. For that moment in time, I relished the relaxed, sensuous vibe of the islands. I’ve never been to Cuba but if I can judge from the photos and stories of other travellers, it’s a place of eminence tropical beauty. F&Fs’ collection is a celebration of glamorous vintage Cuba the: architecture, flora, fauna, sea and sand.
It was hard to stand still while the music played and the taste of avocado and lemon tantalizing my taste buds. As I made my way around F&F’s collection, I was immediately drawn to the banana leaf and floral prints. I noticed island motifs and enquired about the inspiration for the collection. It was then I was told that Cuba was the island inspiration. The colours were stunning, crisp, bright, soothing. Shades of lemon, tangerine, mint, peach, pink, aqua, rose gold, yellow gold and silver. Think dawn, high noon and dusk on a tropical island and all colours possible in the spectre.
The women’s and the girls’ collection are ultra-feminine, enhanced by embroidery, frills and scalloped detailing. Fabrics such as chalet cotton, linen, and georgette which facilitate graceful flowing and fluttering movement will keep the ladies cool and fashionable. The standout pieces for me from the women’s collection were the pleated skirts, Bardot tops. I adore their air of bohemian sensibility. I was impressed by the girl’s active wear, pieces that could be worn for dancers and other round sporty activities. Each item could be a statement piece in its own right with rose gold star detail down the side leg or neon pink trimmings on the gym tops. Slightly younger girls will luv fun nautical motifs such as shells, seahorses and starfish in the form of appliques and prints. The styles includes rompers and jersey boxy dresses.
The men’s and boy’s collection was a combination of and bright with prints and a classic palette of prey, black and cobalt. For the men there are zig zags and chevrons that take the eyes on a journey, dreaming of holidays by the sea. Formal options feature pastel tones of aqua, pink and navy which work well with chinos. Key shapes for the boys include rompers and bomber jackets. T-shirts with eye-catching prints of tropical birds and palm trees. Drawing from safari colours, you get a sense of the young explorer.
F&F Spring/Summer 2017 collection is a success. Who knows what 2017 will bring whether you take a trip to Cuba or not, F&F’s collection captures the essence of the ideal holiday and the spirit of freedom. I look forward to seeing there stunning pieces on the shop floor. I’ve got my eyes on the of the shoulder floral print maxi dress.
