A friend of my recently said, it feels as though we’ve been in lockdown for three years. Many businesses’ doors are still closed to the public. How are they coping? Especially, the smaller ones. I recently put that question and more to Emeka Ikechi, founder of Vanity Studios. Like beauty parlours, photography studios are also shut during the current lockdown, in the UK. It’s likely their doors will reopen on April 12th, like gyms and hairdressers. Emeka Ikechi is Director of Vanity Studios, a contemporary studio for photoshoots in the centre of Shoreditch, London. Vanity Studios was established in 2009 and offers high quality professional photos and an excellent photoshoot experience. This is their founder’s, Emeka Ikechi, interview.

Introducing Emeka Ikechi

TTT: Tell us a bit about yourself.

EI: I was born in Dulwich and grew up in Wimbledon. I now live with my fiancé and 7-month-old baby boy. I always had a keen interest in photography but studied Business and Computer Science at University.

TTT: How did the idea for Vanity Studios and the ethos come about?

EI: In 2008 I was working for another studio that was close to closing down. I knew I could do a better job of the business if I focused on customer satisfaction and quality of the shoot over quantity of shoots.

Getting ready for a photoshoot

TTT: What is your top tip when preparing for a family photoshoot?

EI: Make sure you plan your outfits beforehand. Try to match, not necessarily in colours but definitely in style. Whilst the photographer will aim to get an array of beautiful images, have roughly 5 images in mind that you want to have that would suit your family.

TTT: What is your top tip when preparing for glamour fashion photoshoot?

EI Enjoy it. It’s a private shoot with you as the focus in the hands of somebody experienced in photographing a range of personalities, looks and body types. Trust the photographer. Have an idea in your mind of what you’d like to achieve and bring references if need be.

Customer Feedback About Vanity Studios

TTT: What is your most popular studio package?

EI: Our family package is our most popular. It includes make up, hair styling and prosecco so I think a lot of families see it as a great excuse to get together and do something fun.

TTT: What has been your best customer feedback to date?

EI: Here’s a recent review:

“Heard great things via friends so we decided to book and see for ourself, went with teenage kids and wanted something special that would bring out their personality rather than the bog standard family robotic poses.

We very extremely impressed with the photographer’s skills, my kids’ pictures were amazing and my son who never likes his pic taken used this as his profile pic on social media and got rave reviews!
Excellent day and the staff were so friendly and welcoming!!!
Have recommended to many of my friends.”

The Covid-19 Impact and The Future

TTT: Has the coronavirus and lockdown impacted the way you work?

EI: Yes, we can no longer do photoshoots in the studio so we’ve focused our attention online and have used lockdown to produce helpful educational videos for our clients. These range from makeup tutorials to photography and retouching tips.

TTT: Where do you see Vanity Studios three year from now?

EI: We expect to grow our online community further and be seen as educators in the industry whilst maintaining our reputation as the place to get the best photos in London!
